Abstract
519,902. Alloys: HALL, H. C., and GRESHAM, H. E. Oct. 7, 1938, No. 29085. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] A copper alloy suitable for the sleeves of sleeve valves and for other parts of internal combustion engines contains 8-10.5 per cent. of aluminium, 0.25-0.6 per cent. of silicon, 0.2- 1.5 per cent. of iron, 0.1-2 per cent. of zinc and 0.5-1.2 per cent. of cobalt or of cobalt and nickel, there being always at least 0.5 per cent. of cobalt present. All or part of the zinc may disappear in course of manufacture of the alloy. Up to a total of 0.5 per cent. of up to 0.2 per cent. of each of any of the following elements may also be present : beryllium, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, cerium, manganese, titanium, zirconium, boron, magnesium, tin, arsenic, and phosphorus, also up to 5 per cent. of silver. Heat-treatment may comprise heating to 880-940‹ C., quenching, and ageing at 300-630‹ C. for a period depending on the temperature.
