Abstract
574,511. Alloys ; annealing. HALL, H. C., and WHEELER, M. A. Aug. 24, 1939, No. 24439. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] An aluminium alloy contains 3.9-5.8 per cent of zinc, 2.4-3.4 per cent of magnesium, 0.4-1 per cent of manganese, 0.2-0.65 per cent of iron, 0.05-0.35 per cent of silicon, and 0.08-0.4 per cent of vanadium or zirconium, or both, with or without up to a total of 0.2 per cent of one or more of the elements beryllium, titanium, tin, silver, copper, cadmium, bismuth, arsenic, tungsten, chromium, molybdenum, nickel, cobalt, boron, tantalum, cerium, niobium and lithium. In making the alloy, aluminium alloys containing respectively 5 per cent of vanadium, 12 per cent of manganese and 5 per cent of zirconium may be added to about half the aluminium, the remainder of the aluminium being afterwards added followed by the zinc and magnesium. The alloy may be heat-treated at 430-550‹ C. and quenched, followed by ageing naturally or at up to 180‹ C.
