Abstract
Molten aluminium base alloys containing 1-15 per cent magnesium are treated to inhibit oxidation of the melt and formation of surface skim thereon by inclusion in the melt of 0.0005-0.02 per cent of beryllium. The alloy may contain one or more of the following elements, namely 0.1-5 per cent copper; 2-14 per cent zinc; 0.3-5 per cent silicon; 0.1-2 per cent manganese; 0.1-0.5 per cent chromium; 0.01-0.5 per cent titanium; 0.1-1 per cent vanadium; 0.1-1 per cent molybdenum; 0.1-1 per cent tungsten; 0.1-2 per cent uranium; 0.05-1 per cent zirconium; 0.1-2 per cent nickel; 0.01-0.1 per cent boron and 0.1-2 per cent cobalt, the total quantity of the last eleven elements not exceeding about 2 per cent. Beryllium may be added as a metal or an alloy or as a decomposible compound such as beryllium fluoride or sodium beryllium fluoride.
