Abstract

An aluminium alloy contains 3.3-7.0 per cent silicon, 0.05-0.55 per cent of cobalt and/or chromium, 0.02-3.0 per cent magsium, 0.01-1.8 per cent iron the remainder being aluminium. The alloy may also contain up to 0.25 per cent manganese, up to 3.0 per cent zinc, up to 0.75 per cent in total of one or more of titanium, niobium, cerium and boron, up to 0.45 per cent individually and not more than 0.75 per cent in total of one or more of antimony, calcium, copper, lead, molybdenum, tungsten, tantalum, thallium, thorium, tin, nickel, bismuth, cadmium, beryllium, yttrium, silver, lithium, vanadium and tellurium, and up to 0.15 per cent of one or more of sodium, potassium, barium and phosphorus. The alloy may be used in the sand cast, die cast or worked condition with or without an ageing treatment. This ageing treatment may be preceded by or replaced by solution treatment at 480-560 DEG C. followed by quenching in water or other medium.
