Abstract

An aluminium alloy contains between 3.5 and 6 per cent copper, between 5.5 and 9 per cent silicon, between 0.01 and 0.5 per cent magnesium, between 0.01 and 1 per cent manganese, between 0.2 and 1 per cent iron and between 0.01 and 0.3 per cent titanium, the balance being aluminium. The copper may be partially replaced by an equal amount of up to 2 per cent nickel, and the manganese may be entirely or partially replaced by an equal amount of cobalt. The titanium may be entirely or partially replaced by an equal amount of one or more of the metals cerium, lithium, molybdenum and chromium. The alloy may be solution-treated at 490 DEG to 510 DEG C., quenched and then aged at room temperature and/or artificially at 100 DEG to 170 DEG C for 10 to 20 hours to be improved.
