Abstract
627,968. Alloys. HOLZWORTH, E. H. Oct. 16, 1945, No. 27008. [Class 82(i)] An aluminium alloy of high physical properties contains zinc and magnesium, the percentages of zinc and magnesium being represented by an area on a graph having percentages of zinc and magnesium as ordinate and abscissa, this area being defined by plotting a curve a for the centre of the area according to the equation Y=KAx, where Y=per cent of magnesium, x=percentage of zinc between 3.6 and 12, A=0.85 and K=1.7, and then drawing two additional curves b and c spaced from the main curve by distances corresponding to 30 per cent more magnesium and 30 per cent less magnesium respectively than the proportion of magnesium indicated by curve a, but excepting from the said area that portion in which the percentage of magnesium is greater than 0.827. The remainder of the alloy is aluminium of not less than commercial purity with or without 0.15-1 per cent of titanium, beryllium or boron, from 0.5-1 per cent of chromium or nickel or a combination of any or all of these elements not exceeding 1 per cent in total. The aluminium used may contain not more than 1 per cent of silicon and copper as impurities. Manganese, lead and iron may also be present as impurities in the aluminium used.
