Abstract

A manganese-brass alloy, having excellent retention of composition during manufacture and re-melting, contains 15 to 37.5 per cent Zn, 7.5 to 30 per cent Mn, 0.25 to 2 per cent Si, 0.005 to 2 per cent Be, and the balance substantially all copper, but not less than 50 per cent, i.e. copper with the usual impurities, together with the possible inclusion of up to 0.15 per cent Fe and of 0.1 up to 3 per cent Pb. Preferred ranges for the Si and Be are 0.25 to 1 per cent and 0.01 to 0.5 per cent respectively. Two preferred compositions have Zn and Mn. between (1) 18 to 23 and 15 to 20 per cent, (2) 20 to 25 and 7.5 to 12.5 per cent; the Si and Be ranging from 0.25 to 1 per cent, and 0.01 to 0.2 per cent, within which the Zn and Mn, in particular examples, are in (1) 21 and 18 per cent, in (2) 22 and 10 per cent.
