Abstract

Selenium is added to copper or copper alloys for the purpose of improving machinability. The amount of selenium may be 0,01-4 per cent, preferably 0,25-1 per cent. Other elements may be present of such nature and in such quantity as not to cause separation of the selenium from the molten alloy, for example one or more of the following in specified proportions or ranges of proportions: nickel, zinc, tin, silicon, manganese, iron, aluminium, and cadmium. The presence of antimony, silver, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, and zirconium is also referred to.
