Abstract

An aluminium base alloy has the following composition: Si 9.0-13.0 per cent, Cu 1.0-6.0 per cent, Mg 0.1-1.0 per cent, Co 0.05-1.0 per cent, Mn 0.01-1.5 per cent, together with one or more of the following elements in the proportions stated: Ni 0.5-3.0 per cent, Be 0.01-1.0 per cent, B 0.01-0.5 per cent, Ti 0.01-0.5 per cent. The balance of the alloy is aluminium. The alloy may contain in addition one or more of Nb, Ta, Mo, W, V, Zv, Ce in individual proportions of 0.01-0.5 per cent, the total content by weight of these elements together with B or Ti, if present, being not in excess of 2.0 per cent. If boron is included it may be added to the remaining ingredients in the form of sodium borofluoride which degasses and refines the alloy. The alloy may be modified with metallic sodium in proportion up to 0.15 per cent by weight. Two narrower ranges of compositions containing also iron as an impurity up to 0.5 per cent and specific examples of alloys within the above specified range are referred to.
