Abstract

An aluminium-silicon alloy has the following composition:- Si 3.0-13.0 per cent, Mg 0.1-2.0 per cent, Mn 0.1-1.5 per cent, Cr 0.05-1.5 per cent, Zn 0.1-1.5 per cent, Cu 0.05-4.0 per cent, Fe-1.3 per cent, together with one or more of the following grain refining elements: Ti 0.05-0.3 per cent, Nb 0.01-0.3 per cent, Zr 0.01-0.3 per cent, B 0.002-0.5 per cent, W 0.01-0.3 per cent, Mo 0.01-0.3 per cent, V 0.05-0.3 per cent, in total between 0.002 and 0.5 per cent, the remainder of the alloy being Al. The alloy may also include up to 1.0 per cent of Sn.
