Abstract

A composition of matter, preferably in the form of an alloy, for addition to cast iron or steel comprises: Mg 5.0-25.0 per cent, Si 20.0-45.0 per cent, Cu 3.0-20.0 per cent, Fe 20.0-60.0 per cent and forming, with the usual impurities, the balance. The composition may also contain Ni up to 2.0 per cent. In addition to the impurities such as S and P the composition may contain one or more of the elements C, Mn, Cr, V, Ti, Mo, the total of these elements and impurities being not greater than 5.0 per cent.
