Abstract

A precipitation hardenable stainless steel comprises:- .Cr.7-18% .Ni.6-12% .Al.0.5-2.5% .Mo.2-6.5% .Mn.up to 1% .Si.up to 1% .C.up to 0.05% .P.up to 0.04% .S.up to 0.015% .N.up to 0.05% the balance, apart from impurities, being iron. The steels may also optionally contain: .Ti.up to 0.15% .B.up to 0.005% and one half of the nickel requirement may be replaced by Co in the ratio of three parts Co per part of Ni replaced. The above composition is characterized in that either P is greater than 0.015% or S is greater than 0.01% or both these conditions apply.
