A non-stainless, free machining steel in the as-rolled condition comprises: .Pb.0.02-0.5% .Te.0.02-0.5% .Mn.at least 0.6% .C.up to 1.0% .Cr.up to less than 5.0% the balance, apart from other elements commonly present in non stainless steels, being iron. Optional additives described are: .P.up to 0.07% .S.up to 0.5% .Si.0.01-0.3% .Ni.up to 0.2% .Cu.up to 0.2% .Sn.up to 0.08% .Mo.up to 0.05%
