A free-cutting non-stainless steel includes the following elements in percentages by weight:- .Pb.0.02-0.5 .Te.0.01-0.5 .S.0.02-0.5 The steel may include Mn up to 1 and P up to 0.12 and residual amounts of Cu, Mo, Co or Cr. The Pb and Te are preferably added to the molten steel as lead telluride.
