Abstract

598,192. Alloys. CHADWICK, R., BLENKARN, G. H., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 10, 1945, No. 11702. [Class 82 (i)] Aluminium base alloys having uniform structures in the as-cast condition are selected from within the following ranges : Zn 4.0-15.0 per cent, Mg 0.5-3.5 per cent, Cu 0.25-3.0 per cent, A1 the remainder, the Mg and Cu contents being adjusted in such a manner that the Cu content does not exceed a specific maximum for any particular Mg content and vice versa, these maxima both decreasing with increasing zinc content. The alloys of the invention are exemplified by the areas A and B between the lines xy, yz and the full curve on each of Figs. 1, 2 and 3 which represent ternary diagrams of alloys having zinc contents of 4 per cent, 7.5 per cent and 12 per cent respectively. The alloys may contain up to 1 per cent of Mn and/or up to 0.75 per cent Cr in a total amount not exceeding 1 per cent, and may contain one or more of the following elements, namely 0.05-0.3 per cent Ti, 0.05- 0.3 per cent Ce, 0.02-0.2 per cent B, 0.05-0.3 per cent Zr, 0.05-0.3 per cent V in total not exceeding 0.5 per cent, Co and/or Ni not exceeding 1 per cent in total, up to 2 per cent Th, up to 2 per cent in total of Cd and/or Pb. Fe and Si may be present in impurity proportions up to 0.5 per cent of each. Specifications 153,514, [Class 82 (i)], 539,364, 544,439 and 552,972 are referred to.
