Abstract

Worked aluminium alloys containing 5-7 per cent. of copper, 0.01-0.5 of titanium, 0.01-1.0 of manganese and silicon and iron together not exceeding 0.8 are improved by subjecting them to solution treatment at 535 DEG -545 DEG C. for a period of at least 10 hours, quenching in water at a temperature of 37 DEG C. or more but less than 100 DEG C. and ageing at above 200 DEG C. but below 250 DEG C. for at least 10 hours. The alloys may also contain one or more improving elements, viz., sodium, silver, barium, zinc, the rare earths, vanadium, niobium, chromium, tellerium, cobalt, zirconium antimony, beryllium, bismuth, boron, cadmium, calcium, lead, lithium, molybdenum, tungsten, thellium and thorium up to a total of 0.5 per cent. In an example the solution treatment is at 535-540 DEG C. and the quenching in water at 70-90 DEG C. and may be applied to a worked piston of an internal combustion engine. Specification 578,222 is referred to.
