Abstract

An alloy free from magnesium and zinc except as impurities and containing in percentage by weight <TABS:1023674/C6-C7/1> is solution treated at 900-1050 DEG F. for 1/4 -12 hours, rapidly cooled, strain hardened by cold working and age hardened at 300-400 DEG F. for 1-48 hours. For maximum yield strength the minimum ageing time is given by the expression <FORM:1023674/C6-C7/1> while in a modification to obtain maximum corrosion resistance ageing is governed by <FORM:1023674/C6-C7/2> where t=time to reach a solution potential of 800 millivolts T=hardening temperature CW=% cold work CW=per cent cold work CW=percentage cold work <FORM:1023674/C6-C7/3> up to 20% cold work may be preferred, but 1-10% is preferred.
