Abstract
Zirconium alloys are rendered corrosion-resistant by heating the alloy to the b -range, quenching to a temperature below the a -b range, and heating to above the recrystallization temperature but not exceeding the a -temperature range while simultaneously working the alloy to reduce its cross-section by at least 30%. The alloy may be heated to 1800 DEG F., + 50 DEG F., and quenched to a temperature below 1500 DEG F., then heated to 1100-1500 DEG F. and simultaneously subjected to rolling. The heating in the b -range may be accompanied by mechanical working, e.g. forging, which may be followed by roll cogging.
