Abstract
A martensitic steel comprises <TABS:1039747/C6-C7/1> the balance, apart from impurities, being iron. Impurities mentioned are Cu, Co, S, P, H, N and O. The heat treatment may comprise:-homogenizing at 1150 DEG - 1290 DEG C. hot working and optionally cold working, and cooling to room temperatures to form martensite. If desired after the first cooling the alloy may be solution treated at 785 DEG -1040 DEG C. and again cooled to reform the martensite. In either case an ageing treatment at 425 DEG -540 DEG C.is then carried out. Complete martensitic transformation may be ensured by cooling to -75 DEG C.
