Abstract
An alloy steel comprises : -<TABS:1116651/C6-C7/1> the balance, apart from impurities, being iron. The alloy has a structure of a ferrite matrix in which fine austenite, some of which may have been converted to martensite, is precipitated. The Al may be replaced by one or more of Zr, Ti, Be, Nb, V, Hf, Ta or B in a nitride forming equivalent thereto. To obtain the required structure the steel is heated to 1150 DEG C. air -cooled or water quenched, optionally heated to 800 DEG C. cooled, tempered at 525 DEG -650 DEG C. and finally quenched or air-cooled.
