Abstract
A steel comprises C 0.14-0.24% Mu 0.6-1.2% Si 0.1-less than 0.5% Ni 0.6-1.5% Cu 0.18-0.35% Mo 0.15-0.35% Al 0.015-0.1% B 0.0005-0.005% the balance, apart from impurities such as up to 0.01% Ti and/ot up to 0.1% V, being iron. The steel may be quenched and tempered (e.g. 593-635 DEG C.) and the quenching (e.g. in water) should be rapid enough to ensure at least 90% of the austenite is transformed to martensite. After tenyering the steel is slowly cooled (e.g. air cooling) to minimize distortion. Austentizing may be performed at 813 DEG C. or 913 DEG C.
