Abstract

A process for heat-treating a precipitation hardening magnesium-silicon-aluminium alloy billet prior to extrusion comprises heating the billet to and maintaining it at the solution temperature for sufficient time to place most of the alloying elements in solution and cooling, the rate of cooling from 800 DEG to 400 DEG F. being at at least 300 DEG F. per hour. The billet may be cooled from the solution temperature of 990 DEG to 1100 DEG F. to 800 DEG F. at at least 100 DEG F. per hour, from 800 DEG to 400 DEG F. at at least 300 DEG F. per hour, from 400 DEG to 200 DEG F. at at least 100 DEG F. per hour, and from 200 DEG F. to ambient temperature in any convenient manner. The treated billet may then be heated rapidly, preferably by induction heating, to the extrusion temperature of 550 DEG to 850 DEG F. and extruded. After extrusion the material may be quenched.
