Abstract

Semiproducts such as sheets, bars, ribbon, tubes or wires in aluminium base alloys containing magnesium and silicon are heat treated by moving them along continuously, e.g. on a single conveyer 4 as shown in Fig. 5, through a first furnace 1 to put magnesium and silicon into solid condition, then through a quenching chamber 2, where cooling is effected by either forced air cooling or by water or mist sprays, and into a second furnace 3, which is heated by forced hot air circulation, e.g. to between 100 and 250 DEG C., to be subjected to a stabilizing treatment which is a short-term age-hardening below the normal age-hardening temperature, the time interval between quenching and reaching stabilizing treatment temperature being less than ten minutes ; the stabilized semiproducts are then subjected to a final heat-treatment when convenient. Conveniently the first furnace is also heated by forced hot air <PICT:0949188/C3/1> circulation, e.g. to between 450 and 600 DEG C. The surfaces of the semiproduct may be finished after the stabilizing treatment and before the final heat treatment.
