Abstract
An aluminium-base alloy containing in percentage by weight .Si 0.2. - 1.3 .Mg 0.3. - 1.4 and optionally <TABS:1102822/C6-C7/1> is solution treated at 950 DEG -1150 DEG F. for at least 5 minutes, hot rolled with a cooling rate during rolling of greater than 100 DEG F. per minute, and subjected within 20 seconds to a further cooling to below 250 DEG F. at a rate greater than 100 DEG F. per minute. The alloy may then be cold drawn with at least 30% reduction in cross-section, and finally heated at 250 DEG -450 DEG F. for at least 15 mins. The process is particularly applicable to the production of electrical conductors, but may also be applied to sheet or plate.
