Abstract

A method of treating aluminium-magnesium alloys containing 9.5-12.0 per cent magnesium, to impart thereto a fine grain structure and relatively high average value of physical properties, comprises treating the alloy while in its molten condition with boron trichloride to degasify and scour the alloy, using excess of the trichloride sufficient to provide a boron content in the alloy of 0.001-0.05 per cent, casting the alloy and heat treating the casting at a solution-anneal temperature of 820 DEG F for from 3 to 4 hours, slow cooling the casting to a temperature within the range 680 DEG F-730 DEG F, and quenching in cold water to room temperature. The casting may then be aged for a period of approximately 90 days. Degasification and scouring is perperably obtained by a strong free flow of trichloride for approximately 2 seconds for each pound of molten metal to be treated.
