Abstract
A method of heat treating a zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy containing an a -phase comprising a solid solution of magnesium and aluminium in zinc and a b -phase comprising a magnesium-rich constituent, comprises heating the alloy at such a temperature and for such a time that the magnesium goes completely into solution and then tempering the alloy to form a fine-grained structure or cooling the alloy from the solution temperature at a controlled rate. The alloy may contain in addition to zinc 0.10-0.50% Al and 0.01-0.05% Mg. The solution treatment may be at 300 DEG C. after which the alloy may be cooled from 300 DEG C. to 100 DEG C. at a rate not exceeding 10 DEG C. per hour, or may be tempered at 180 DEG C. for 15 hours.
