Abstract
1,220,443. Heat-treating alloys. PRESSED STEEL FISHER Ltd. Jan.15, 1968 [Feb. 1, 1967], No.4796/67. Headings C7A and C7N. Those eutectoid or near eutectoid alloys that on quenching to ambient temperature from above the eutectoid transformation temperature retain the high temperature structure for an incubation period before transformation occurs are quenched to a temperature below ambient and are then warmed at least to ambient temperature before or during transformation. As exemplified 78% Zn-22% Al was heated for 30 minutes in a furnace at 350 C., quenched to -10 C. in equal parts of water and ethylene glycol, held for 1 hour and then placed in water at 40 C. to bring about transformation; a sample of 70% Zn-30% Al was quenched from 35% into cold water and then cooled to 20% in solid carbon dioxide and methyl alcohol, at which temperature it was held for 2 hours, after which it was immersed in water at 25 C.
