Abstract

A method of annealing aluminium killed steel comprises the steps of heating the steel at a rate of not less than 50 DEG C. per hour to a staging temperature below the recrystallization temperature and within a staging temperature zone of from 450-525 DEG C. causing the steel temperature to dwell in said staging zone at or above said staging temperature for a time of not less than 30 minutes and not more than 4 hours, then heating the steel to an annealing temperature within the range of from 600-750 DEG C. at a rate of not more than 150 Centigrade degrees per hour, holding the steel at the annealing temperature for a predetermined period and then allowing or causing the steel to cool to atmospheric temperature to produce an annealed steel. The time for which the steel is held at the staging temperature, is dependent upon the temperature chosen for staging; i.e. the time varies in accordance with a straight line law from 4 hours at a staging temperature of 450 DEG C. to 30 minutes at a staging temperature of 525 DEG C. Alternatively the staging period may be achieved by slowly heating the steel through a portion of the staging zone, having a span of at least 30 DEG C., at rate of 50 Centigrade degrees/hour or less.
