Abstract
1289488 Tempering glass ASAHI GLASS CO Ltd 23 Dec 1969 [24 Dec 1968] 62555/69 Heading C1M A continuously-produced glass ribbon 1 is treated in a localized zone 2, which is subsequently to form a cutting zone, at a temperature above the annealing point, such that in a subsequent quenching the said zone is cooler than the remaining ribbon, and then the entire glass ribbon is uniformly quenched. The local treatment may be by localized quenching, preferably by contacting the ribbon with cooling air or an element of metal or graphite. Alternatively the local treatment may comprise reducing the thickness of the ribbon in the zone in question, e.g. by scoring a groove 4 in the ribbon. The cutting zone may be 1-8 cm. wide and, in the case of a groove, may be 40-80% of the depth of the ribbon. A cutting line 3 may be scored in the localized zone either before or after the uniform quenching, and the glass subsequently broken along this line, e.g. using a wheel cutter.
