Abstract

577,170. Heat-treating copper alloys. COOK, M., ALEXANDER, W. O., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 21, 1941, No. 5112. [Classes 72 and 82(i)] Copper base alloys containing 5-30 per cent of manganese and 5-30 of nickel are hardened by subjecting them to heat-treatment adapted to effect temper or precipitation hardening. The heat treatment comprises heating to a temperature between 650‹ C. and the melting point of the alloy and either cooling at a rate slow enough, e,g., 5-50‹ C. per minute, to effect hardening, or quenching and reheating to 300-600‹ C. for a time sufficient to impart the desired degree of hardness. The quenching may be substituted by cooling to an intermediate temperature e.g., 600-750‹ C. at a rate sufficient to retain supersaturation and then rapidly cooling to room temperature. The alloys may be cold worked before the reheating to .300-600‹ C. The alloys may also contain up to 5 per cent each of one or more of magnesium, phosphorus, chromium, silver, silicon, barium, calcium, cadmium and tin and /or up to 0.5 of aluminium, the total additions not exceeding 10 per cent. The alloys may be used for the manufacture of valves, springs and non-sparking tools with cutting edges. Specification 395,720 is referred to.
