Abstract

1,165,728. Improving physical properties. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 26 Sept., 1966 [15 Oct., 1965], No. 42818/66. Heading B3V. [Also in Division C7] Steel containing nickel together with chromium and/or molybdenum in sufficient amount to combine with all the carbon present, and having a martensite start temperature substantially below room temperature, is austenitized and is then worked to give a reduction in thickness of at least 25%, preferably about 80%, in the temperature range 400‹ C. to 600‹ C. at which a high-density dislocation network with slip bands is formed. The steel is then subjected to a cyclic quenching and tempering process, the quenching being carried out at progressively lower sub-zero temperatures.
