Abstract
A method of making a chain roller comprises forming the roller of low carbon steel and quenching from a temperature above the upper critical temperature. The roller may be quenched in water brine, or caustic soda from a temperature 20 DEG -100 DEG C. above the upper critical temperature. The steel may contain 0.08-0.3% carbon and may also contain 0.08-0.3% Ni, over 0.30% Cr, 0.15-0.5% Mo, and 0.8-2.0% Mn, the total alloying elements not exceeding 8.0%. Preferably there is no tempering treatment, but any tempering carried out should not reduce the tensile strength by more than 10%.
