Abstract

A method of surface hardening alloy steels comprises heating by means of oxygen-gas burners or induction heating devices alloy steels comprising:- .0.2-0.8%.C :.0.1-1.0%.Si : .0.3-2.0%.Mn :.2.1-5.0%.Cr : with or without one or more of .0.2-3.0%.Mo :.0.1-0.8%.V : .0 -9.0%.W :.0 -2.0%.Co : .0 -2.0%.Ni :.0 -0.5%.Zr : .0 -0.5%.Ti.. and the balance iron and unavoidable impurities and quenching the heated steel in water. The water may be preheated to 60-70 DEG C. The method is stated to be particularly suitable for hot rolls after machining, which rolls may be tempered to give a Shore D hardness of 70.
