Abstract

An iron base alloy comprises: .C.more than 0.8% but less than 0.9% .Mn.1.85-2.16% .Si.0.25-0.5% .Cr.0.75-1.10% .Mo.1.20-1.40% .V.0.45-0.85% the balance being Fe plus incidental impurities. The heat treatment disclosed comprises heating to 1475-1575 DEG F. (preferably 1525 DEG F.) for 8 minutes and air quenching which may be followed by tempering at 200-1000 DEG F.
