Abstract

A steel comprising: .C.0.35- 0.6% .Ni.3.0 - 7.0% .Cr.0.2 - 0.5% .Mn.0 - 2.0% .Si.0 - 2.0% .Mo.0 - 0.5% .V.0 - 0.2% .Co.0 - 5.0% .Al.0 - 1.0% .S.0 - 0.01% .P.0 - 0.01% the balance, apart from incidental impurities (e.g. Nb, Ta, Ti, Zr, B, Cu and Ca), being iron, is heat treated by austenitizing, quenching and tempering at 350-800 DEG F. The quenching may be carried out in oil or in a fused salt bath, the preferred austenitizing temperature being over 1400 DEG F. After tempering as above the steel may be prestrained beyond its elastic limit to the extent of 1-6% and then strain aged below the tempering temperature. The plastic pre-strain referred to above is preferably caused by applying a stress in the direction in which stress will occur during use of the part (e.g. compression or tensile stress when the part is to be used under compression or tension respectively).
