Abstract
Steel having good low temperature toughness and containing <TABS:1011794/C6-C7/1> the balance being iron and usual impurities, is treated at 600-700 DEG C. to precipitate aluminium nitride. The treatment may be applied to the material in the hot-rolled or forged condition, or may follow a treatment at 880-950 DEG C., the cooling rate from this range to below 600 DEG C. being sufficiently high to retain aluminium nitride in solution while at the same time producing a fine ferritic structure. A suitable range of cooling rates is 5-50 DEG C./sec.
