Abstract
Steels, the properties of which are enhanced by the presence of dispersed nitrides, are produced by blowing through the molten steel at a pressure not exceeding 5 mgm./cm.2 a stream of nitrogen with or without inert gas, in which calcium cyanamide may be suspended, and following this with the addition of one or more of aluminium, niobium or beryllium in such amount that the steel contains 0.01-0.1% by weight of each of the nitrides of those metals added Titanium and/or zirconium may then be added in an amount of 0.03-0.3% each to combine with excess nitrogen and leave 0.01-0.1% of each nitride dispersed in the steel, the remainder separating out. The steels treated by this process contain in percentage by weight: .C.less than 0.35 .Mn.less than 1 .Si.less than 1 .Ni, Cr, Mo, V.less than 1 of each .S.less than 0.035 .P.less than 0.035 .Fe.balance Precipitation of dispersed nitrides is brought about by hot working the steel, in the range 1100-600 DEG C., and may be enhanced by a further heating at 950 DEG C.
