Abstract
An alloy steel consists of the following by weight: ..C.0.15- 0.65%,. ..Ni.7.0 -12.0%,. ..Co.0.2 - 7.0%,. ..Mn and Al each.0 - 2.0%,. ..Si.0 - 3.0%,. ..P and S each not over.0.04%,. .one.Cr.0 - 1.0%.total .or.Mo.0 - 0.6%.at least .more.V.0 - 0.35%.0.12%, .of.Nb.0 - 0.4%. ..Fe and incidental impurities as balance... Part or all of Mo may be replaced by W in proportion 3 parts W to 1 part Mo. Part or all of V, Al and/or Si may be replaced by equivalent amounts of one or more of Ti, Zr and rare earth metals. Part or all of V, Si, Mn, Cr, Mo and/or Ni may be replaced by equivalent amounts of B. The steel may be strengthened by austenitizing e.g. at 1400-1500 DEG F., plastically deforming it while in the austenitic state, and then quenching e.g. in oil sufficiently rapidly to room temperature preferably followed by refrigerating in liquid nitrogen to impart to the steel a martensitic microstructure. Thereafter the steel may be tempered at 400-700 DEG F.
