Abstract

Low carbon iron-base alloy containing 10-30% of nickel and one or more hardening elements is austenitized e.g. at 750 DEG - 1050 DEG C. and then transformed to martensite either before or after the strip is at least partly formed into razor blades. The blades are then further heat-treated, preferably at 400 DEG - 550 DEG C. to attain a hardness greater than 450 V.P.N. Transformation to martensite may be effected by cooling, possibly to sub-zero temperatures, or by cold working. The preferred upper limits for the other alloying elements are .cobalt.15.manganese.0.5 .molybdenum.6.silicon.0.5 .titanium.5.sulphur.0.05 .aluminium.5.phosphorus.0.05 .niobium.4.boron.0.1 .chromium.15.calcium.0.1 .carbon.0.1.zirconium.0.25
