Abstract

A weldable cast steel with a high elastic limit containing, besides iron, minimum quantities of carbon, manganese, molybdenum, silicon, vanadium, niobium or tantalum, aluminium, titanium, nickel, chromium, sulphur and phosphorus with a very finely grained microstructure, consisting of bainite of low carbon content and ferrite hardened by the presence of fine precipitates of complex molybdenum, vanadium and niobium or tantalum carbonitrides, this steel being weldable and having an elastic limit higher than or equal to 550 N/mm<2>, an elastic limit/ultimate tensile strength ratio higher than 0.85 and an energy of fracture at -50 DEG C on a V-notched bar higher than or equal to 20 joules. It has undergone a cycle of heat treatments comprising a homogenisation at high temperature, quenching with water and annealing. The steel can be employed for the manufacture of equipment of reduced weight, essentially of equipment assembled by welding, or of single-block equipment.
