Abstract
A free-machining stainless steel has the following percentage composition:- .Cr.11-30 .C plus N.0-1.2 Mo and/or W and/or .Zr.0-0.6 .Si.0-1 S and/or Se and/or .Te.0.18-0.5 .Mn.0.8-5 .Ni.0-3 .Cu.0-2 .Al.0-5 .Ti.0-1 .Fe.the balance the ratio of Mn to S and/or Se and/or Te being at least 3 Examples of the alloy were austenitized at 1800 DEG F., oil quenched and tempered at 500-1400 DEG F.
