Abstract
The machinability of an austenite stainless steel containing 0.25 - 0.45% S is enhanced by including 2 - 7% Mn, the contents of Mn and S falling below the graph M in Fig. 7. The steel preferably has the following percentage composition: .C.up to 0.5 .S.0.25 - 0.45 .Mn.2 - 7 .Cr.16 - 30 .Ni.5 - 26 .Si.0 - 3 .Mo.0 - 4 .Zr.0 - 1 .Cu.0 - 4 .Se, Te, Pb, Nb.0 - 0.5 each .Ta, Ti.0 - 2 in total .N.0 - 0.35 .P.0 - 0.5 .Fe.the remainder
