Abstract

A hardenable stainless steel has a composition within the following range .Cr.8 -14% .Ni.8 -12% .Ti and/or Al.0.5- 2% one of the metals .Mo.0.5- 6% .V.0.5- 4% .Cu.0.5- 8% .Co.0.5- 6% .W.0.5- 6% or two or more of these metals in total amount 0.5-6% .C.not over 0.03% .Fe.the balance The alloy may also include one or more of Ca, B and Zr in total amount up to 0.2%. The alloy is solution heat-treated at about 850 DEG C. and cooled in air or quenched in water. Following cold working or machining it is then hardened in the range 350-550 DEG C. and cooled in air or quenched in water.
