Abstract

Blanks for flexible cutting tools are prepared from an unstable nickel chromium austenitic steel containing up to 0.5% by weight of carbon by heat treatment in the range 950-1250 DEG C., quenching, cold working to bring about a 75-96% reduction in cross-sectional area at a temperature such that the product contains at least 40% of martensite, and finally tempering within the range 350-550 DEG C. Preferred compositions are those containing in percentage by weight <TABS:0979512/C6-C7/1> The cold deformation may be achieved by rolling which is preferably carried out in the range 15-30 DEG C. but which may be carried out at temperatures down to -10 DEG C. The rolling process may be so arranged, e.g. by the use of shaped rolls, that a greater amount of deformation is given to that part of the blank forming the cutting edge, whereby a higher martensite concentration occurs there. Cutting edges may be formed, and a final grinding given, before or after the tempering treatment.
