Abstract

Low carbon steel in elongated form is quenched from the annealing temperature and before quench-ageing is complete is rolled and is then strain-aged until a stable product is obtained. If desired a further rolling and strain-ageing step may follow. The process may be carried out continuously, and may be associated with a galvanizing or tin-plating line, strain-ageing being effected in the former case by the galvanizing step, and in the latter by a flow-brightening or a lacquering treatment. Annealing may be carried out at 680-880 DEG C. and the ageing treatments at 100-200 DEG C. Heating may be by molten salt bath, and quenching may be into water, oil or molten lead-bismuth alloy.
