870,556. Heat treating. WISTRA OFENBAU G.m.b.H. May 16, 1958 [May 17, 1957; Aug. 3. 1957; Oct. 7, 1957], No. 15828/58. Class 72 Elongated articles are heated slowly to 400-500‹ C. in a continuously operated preheating furnace, brought up to the hardening temperature rapidly in a second furnace, quenched by passing them longitudinally through a continuously operated quenching device, and tempered in a further heating furnace. As shown, elongated articles are passed through an aperture 1 in furnace 3, on to roller bed 2 and slowly brought to 400-500‹ C. while being moved by a conveyer device 4 across furnace 3 to roller bed 5. The preheated articles are passed longitudinally through furnaces 7, 8 and 9 which brings them up to the hardening temperature, and then passed through spray quench chamber 11 which is supplied with quenching oil by a pump 20 and has a protective gas entry chamber 14 supplied with protective gas from furnace 3 by a duct 18 and fan 17. The quenched articles are passed through tempering furnace 26. Modifications are disclosed in which the furnaces 7, 8, 9 may be replaced by an electric induction heating line, the quenching chamber may be replaced by a combination of a spray quench followed by immersion, or by a series of spray quenches of varying intensity and using a variety of cooling media so as to achieve any desired cooling curve, or the quench may employ a gaseous cooling medium to cool to 650‹C. at which temperature the material may be isothermally transformed.
