Abstract

1353753 Metal heat treatment process BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 17 April 1972 [22 April 1971 18 Jan 1972] 10734/71 and 2352/72 Heading C7N In a metal hardening process the metal is, in sequence, heated to an elevated temperature, quenched to a temperature not less than ambient, cooled slowly to within the range -80 to -120‹C in a single cooling region, which is initially at or near ambient temperature, by indirect heat exchange with cold or liquefied gas or by direct contact with cold gas, allowed to return to ambient temperature, then tempered at elevated temperature and finally cooled to ambient temperature. In the treatment of a tool steel such as one containing 18%W, 4%Cr and 1%V the initial heating may be a preheating to 650-900‹C followed by a short heating to 750-1325‹C e.g. for 1 to 5 minutes and the quenching to a temperature in the range ambient to 500‹C, e.g. in a gas such as air or nitrogen or oil or molten salt. Sub-zero cooling may take place in a bath of acetone through which liquid nitrogen is slowly passed to cool the acetone e.g. to -100‹C in 10 minutes. In a further method of cooling the metal being treated is placed in a box 2 having front and rear sections 4 and 6. Cold gas is circulated from inlet 10 to outlet 12 and insulated duct 14 circulation being by blower 16. Liquefied gas is introduced into duct 14 by sprayer 20 the liquefied gas supply being controlled by thermostat. Subsequent tempering may be effected in the range 150-600‹C for ¢ to 2 hours.
