Abstract

1454837 Heat-treatment of metals H E MOBIUS 9 April 1974 [9 April 1973 1 March 1974] 15699/74 Heading C7N The rapid and accurate heat-treatment of metals in fuse form is carried out in an evacuated chamber 3 into which the vapour of a boiling metal bath 8 is introduced and condensed on the material to be treated. Suitable bath materials are Ma, K, Bi or Li. On completion of treatment the chamber is freed of metal vapour by closing valve 7 and condensing vapour on cooling element 10 through valve 11. Various heat-treatment temperatures can be obtained and controlled by adjustment of pressure above bath 8 between 0À1 to 5 atmospheres, preferably 0À5-1 atmospheres. Process applicable to large bodies where only surface layer requires treatment i.e. cold-rolls. Complex heat-treatments requiring multiple stages i.e. hardening and tampering, austempering or isothermal annealing of steels or solution treatment quenching and aging of non- ferrous alloys can be carried out in furnaces with multiple stages e.g. as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
