Abstract
1439072 Heat treating hyper eutectoid steel TORRINGTONCO 15 May 1973 [18 May 1972] 52103/75 Divided out of 1439071 Headings C7A and C7U A hyper eutectoid steel containing less than 10% total alloy content is heated to the austenitizing temperature to take initial carbides into solution and quenched into the temperature range 900- 1333F bring about transformation to pearlite. It is then re-heated rapidly through A 1,3 and A cm for a time sufficient only to transform ferrite to austenite and the carbide lamellal into fine globules, and quenched. Between the pearlite transformation and final hardening steps the steel may be cooled and possibly also cold worked. In a modification of the process the steel is simultaneously carburized at the initial austenitizing temperature. The rapid heating for hardening may be achieved by resistance or induction heating, or by use of two metal or salt baths in succession, the first providing pre-heating to just below A 1,3 . Suitable steels are
