Abstract

Metal parts are heated to a specified temp. and then quenched in a liq., where the surface of the liq. is subjected to a pressure above atmos. press., pref. up to 2.5 bars, esp. using a closed system and 1.2-2.0 bars. The pref. process consists of quenching parts made of ball bearing steel in oil which is stirred and subjected to a surface press. of 1.2 bars, esp. raising the press. so the oil remains below its b.pt. The pref. plant consists of a vacuum furnace with a quenching chamber fed with pressurised inert gas and fitted with a safety valve; the quenching medium is pref. provided with stirrers. Used e.g. in the hardening of 300 kg ball bearing races. The cooling speed of the steel is increased (e.g. by 30%) so that variations in hardening efficiency are completely eliminated.
